Held at the new EXP, seven Northeastern University undergraduate student teams recently showcased the innovative spirit of its students in a captivating XR Jam. These diverse groups came together, each armed with the power of extended reality (XR), to reimagine the future of campus life. They produced solutions to genuine human problems, underscoring Northeastern’s unique approach to technology: that it’s at its best when it improves human lives.
One of the standout experiences was the virtual classroom, an interactive 3D environment where faculty could record lectures and teach with virtual props and objects. This digital space brought a futuristic flair to learning, giving students and faculty the flexibility to be present without being physically bound by location.
Another creation was a life-sized virtual circuit board. Students and enthusiasts alike can dive deep into the world of electronics, understanding how transistors work from an immersive, up-close perspective. The hands-on learning approach, facilitated through XR, offers a unique educational experience, making complex electrionic engineering concepts easily digestible.
The “outdoor” studying areas were serene, virtually crafted spaces transported students to calm environments, perfect for concentration or relaxation. By blending the boundaries between the digital and physical realms, these areas promoted well-being and academic productivity.
Art enthusiasts and campus visitors were also catered to. An augmented reality (AR) experience, when pointed at various artworks scattered across the campus, provided users with rich contextual information. This blend of art and technology fostered a deeper appreciation for the campus’s artistic works, making every visit or walk around campus an enlightening journey.
Northeastern has always distinguished itself by its forward-thinking ethos, and this XR Jam epitomized that spirit. While many institutions explore XR for its technological prowess, Northeastern uses it as a tool to solve real-world problems and enhance campus life. The students’ creations in this jam weren’t just futuristic fantasies but actionable ideas, demonstrating how XR can be leveraged for the betterment of student life.
In an era where technology often seems to isolate more than it connects, Northeastern’s Student XR Jam showcased the potential for tech to foster community, enhance learning, and make life on campus more vibrant and inclusive. The future of campus life is exciting, and at Northeastern, it’s already unfolding.
